Dental Implants have changed dentistry forever. In the past if a person was missing teeth, even just a single tooth, we had to either burden neighboring teeth by hanging appliances on them or accept subpar devices that relied on glues to hold them in. We now use dental implants for a variety of replacement applications with success rates in the 95% range. No more damaging adjacent teeth or worrying about prosthetics falling out mid sentence. There are options for almost every patient. Long lost confidence and function is returned to overjoyed patients every day.
An implant is actually a series of procedures used to replace a missing tooth. First, a titanium anchor is set into the original tooth’s socket. Then, the anchor is capped with a crown designed to match the surrounding teeth. Over time, the jawbone forms a bond with the anchor, much like a natural, healthy tooth would. This helps to preserve the surrounding bone and gum tissue, and eliminates the embarrassing, oftentimes painful slippage commonly experienced with removable options, like dentures.
Unlike dentures, bridges, and paritals, requiring regular maintenance and eventual replacement, most patients can expect their implants to last a lifetime with routine care. And while fixed dental bridges offer some of the cosmetic benefits of implants, they require natural teeth to be filed down to accept the bridge. This process increases the risk of periodontal disease and decay, and may lead to the need for additional services.
Due to technological advances, dental implants now approximate the look and feel of natural teeth so well that we at Boise Smile Design think of it as making real teeth, rather than creating the illusion of real teeth. Contact us today to find out if dental implants are right for you.
